Member Profile: Deathany
How long have you been a member of There?
A little over 2 months. I started playing at the end of January.
What are your favorite movie genres?
I prefer dramas and suedo-independent flicks. I'm not a big comedy or action girl. I don't get into science fiction either.
What are your favorite movies?
I've been watching older movies lately, like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, 12 Angry Men, Hitchcok's Rope, etc., but I like some newer movies like Fight Club and Buffy. Amelie was great too.
Buffy the TV show or Buffy the movie?
I don't have any TV channels, so I don't watch much. I'll rent "The Sopranos", "Six Feet Under" or "Queer as Folk" though. I think my favorite miniseries recently has been "Band of Brothers".
What is your current movie receommendation?
12 Angry Men. I see it being so applicable to some of today's issues, and I would love to see it remade. If it were remade today, though, I'm sure there would be women in it, so it would be titled something different.
When did you realize how much you enjoyed movies?
Back in college. It was so hard for me to figure out what I wanted to major in, and I settled with art at first. Then animation, and lastly film. I've been watching a movie a day for a few years now.
What do you do in real life?
I'm currently unemployed. I'm waiting for a friend to get out of Microsoft so a group of us can start our own film production company here in Seattle.
You said you liked pseudo-indie films, can you name a few that you've seen and would recommend?
Kids, Bully, King is Alive, Memento. Anything that focuses on an interesting storyline and cuts out the unnecessary action scenes.
Who are your favorite directors?
David Fincher, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, Larry Clark.
Who are your favorite actors and actresses?
I don't focus too much on actors and actresses. Of course, I love Robert De Niro. Ed Norton is becoming a favorite as well. Tishiro Mifune is awesome... I love his films.
Seven Samurai?
I love that film! It's definitely in my top 10.
What do you think are overlooked films?
I've been looking into Dogme films. I haven't found any that I really really like yet, but the concept is great. Dogme films focus on storyline. They have a really tough set of rules in order to be considered dogme. No unnecessary action scenes, no crane shots, all pretty low budget stuff. Very anti-Hollywood.
Can you name some bad films?
A buddy of mine is into B horror flicks. Like the Troma stuff. They're good for a laugh, but they're not very good. I can't stand most fantasy/science fiction stuff either... just too quirky. Italian for Beginners comes to mind. Bjork's Dancer in the Dark didn't do it for me either. I love her to pieces, but I'm not into musicals.
Are there any movies you are eager to see?
Yes. A ton. I don't go to the theatre much, and I've been wanting to see Celebration, Adaptation, The Pianist, The Hours. I've been dying to see Max and Bowling for Columbine.
Are you a home watcher or a theatre watcher?
Home-watcher. Most of the time, theatre experiences are pretty disappointing.
What things about films do you get into?
I'm a big eye candy girl. I really go for cinematrogrpahy. When I was in school for animation, a teacher of mine told me that he would rent a movie and he would watch it twice in a row. The first time was to enjoy the movie's story, adn the second time was to observe lighting, cinematogrpahy, camera movies and angles, etc, Costumes. I used to rent horrible movies that would have great 3D work in them just to see what is the coolest stuff, but now I watch lighting since that's what I'll be concentrating on in our company.
Deathany on Tarantino:
Tarantino's "action" film seems interesting, although I've heard it's not as actiony as the teaser shows. I miss him... I love his earlier work.
Deathany on The Ring:
It's amazing just how much they copied the little details [from the original Ringu]. I never bothered hitting the theaters for The Ring because it seemed like a silly teen horror flick, but I saw it on DVD and I was thoroughly impressed. A lot of what made The Ring better was the cinematography and effects. The cool low saturated blue and black feel worked really well.
Deathany on cinematography in movies:
Even though I love the storyline for Fight Club, the cinematography was done really well also. If you really observe it, it's put together really well... really tight. Payback has good cinematography. And so did Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor. The sets for Cleopatra were outrageous. Same thing goes for Gone With the Wind. Massive massive sets. Kinda like what Gangs of New York was going for. I haven't seen it yet... I've only read about it. I'm holding out for the director's cut.
Where do you see the There Film Society going in the future?
I'm hoping that we get a wide variety of enthusiasts. Buddying filmmakers, scriptwriters, and artists, as well as critics and viewers. I love to discuss movies and how they were made... kinda get an online community started. Wouldn't it be cool to get some really talented people gathered to make a movie? I'd love help writing scripts and whatnot. Get those networking juices flowing.
